While the opulent Phantom limousine ensures that its front seat occupants are treated to the finest trimmings and ample motivation from the BMW-derived 6.8-liter V-12 engine, the truly privileged occupants are those in the fully adjustable rear thrones.

As a response to the popularity of arch-rival Bentley’s Continental Flying Spur, which sports a 552hp, 12-cylinder engine that can push the 5,456-pound car to 195 mph, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has revealed the first sketches of their new model, known now as the RR4. This new Rolls will be smaller than the Phantom and will use a unique engine, likely a derivative of the Phantom’s 453hp 12; it will be built alongside the Phantom at the automaker’s Goodwood manufacturing facilities.

Chief designer, Ian Cameron, says, “The RR4 has a more informal presence than the Phantom models, with a greater emphasis on driving. In design terms, this is expressed through its slightly smaller dimensions and more organic form, yet with powerful, purposeful proportions. It is a true and uncompromising Rolls-Royce in every sense.”

“RR4 will mark a milestone in the history of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars,” Chairman Ian Robertson adds. “The business continues to go from strength to strength, and the introduction of this new model will expand the appeal of the brand.”

Further design and engineering details will be announced in 2009.
